Before you hire

1. 01Define the job: what is wrong, your timeline and budget, and any HOA approval or permit it needs.
2. 02Get two or three written estimates and compare the scope of work, not just the price.
3. 03Confirm any license the work needs. For contractors, the Nevada State Contractors Board license search shows whether the license is active, whether the name matches and whether the classification fits the job.
4. 04Get everything in writing: scope, materials, price, schedule, warranty and how changes are approved.
5. 05Never pay most of the job upfront. Payments should follow the progress of the work.

Las Vegas notes

• An unserviced pool can turn green within 10 to 14 days in summer, so start weekly service right after you move in.

• Heat raises chlorine demand and evaporation concentrates minerals. Test weekly in summer and at least twice a month in winter.

• Run the pump 8 to 12 hours a day at peak summer, and add algaecide before the first heat wave.
