Before you hire

  1. 01Define the job: what is wrong, your timeline and budget, and any HOA approval or permit it needs.
  2. 02Get two or three written estimates and compare the scope of work, not just the price.
  3. 03Ask for the company's business license and insurance, and get a firm price before any lock is touched.
  4. 04Get everything in writing: scope, materials, price, schedule, warranty and how changes are approved.
  5. 05Never pay most of the job upfront. Payments should follow the progress of the work.

Las Vegas notes

  • Rekey or replace exterior locks on move-in day. Former owners, contractors and housekeepers may still have keys.

  • Expect roughly $50 to $150 per lock. Most jobs take under an hour.

  • Include the garage entry door and side gates, and reset any garage keypad codes yourself.
